About the NDIS and Assistive Technology

  • The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a progressive initiative by the Australian government, dedicated to supporting Australians with permanent and significant disabilities. It provides essential financial assistance and access to support services, empowering participants to lead fulfilling lives.

  • Smart home devices are at the forefront of assistive technology (AT). Recognised by the NDIS, these devices are designed to increase functional capacity and foster independence, helping individuals overcome daily challenges.

  • To utilise NDIS funding for smart home technology, consider the following criteria:

Disability-Related Needs: The technology must be directly related to your disability and address your specific needs.

Reasonable and Necessary: The technology must be the most efficient and cost-effective solution available for your needs.

Alignment with Goals: The smart home technology should align with the goals outlined in your NDIS plan.

How to apply for NDIS-funded smart home technology with Homeable

Now that you’ve determined that you are eligible to proceed, follow this guide to obtain NDIS funding for smart home technology.

How to get funding for smart home technology into your next plan

  1. Assessment: Discuss your interest in smart home technology with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Support Coordinator and Occupational Therapist (OT). They will help assess your eligibility and guide you through the application process.

  2. Quotes and documentation: Obtain quotes from reputable smart home technology providers like Homeable, detailing the specific items and services you require. Prepare any relevant documentation, such as OT assessments or reports, that support your application.

  3. Submit your application: Complete the necessary paperwork and submit it to the NDIA for your NDIS planning meeting or next plan review. Be sure to include all relevant information to strengthen your case for funding approval. Your OT can help with this!

How to use your existing plan for smart home technology

  1. Examine your existing NDIS plan, particularly your Capital funding for assistive technology, to identify any remaining AT funding that can be allocated to smart home technology. For low-cost AT that is under $1500, you can use your Core-Consumables funding if you believe that you meet the eligibility criteria. The great news is, there are so many smart home devices out there that fall within $1500. Homeable provides services under these registration groups:

    • 103 Assistive Products for Personal Care and Safety

    • 113 Vision Equipment

    • 122 Hearing Equipment

    • 123 Assistive Products in Household Tasks

    • 124 Communication and Information Equipment

  2. Evaluate how smart home technology can enhance your independence and daily living. Determine which specific smart home devices, such as smart lights or motorised blinds, will be most beneficial for you.

  3. Consult with your Occupational Therapist or relevant Allied Health Professional to assess your requirements and obtain supporting documentation, along with quotes from smart home providers, which will be submitted for approval.

Plan Management and Funding Options

The process of funding and paying for smart home technology through the NDIS can vary depending on your plan management type.

  1. For self-managed participants, you have the freedom to choose your smart home technology provider and purchase the approved devices using your NDIS funds. You'll also handle invoices and reimbursement claims personally.

  2. For plan-managed participants, participants can select a Plan Management Provider to handle payments and reimbursements for the approved smart home technology. They will often work with your OT and Support Coordinator to obtain quotes and approval for you.

  3. For NDIA-managed participants, the NDIA directly manages the payment process for the approved devices based on the obtained quotes and approval. This is all done through the NDIS portal. If you are NDIA managed, you will have to select a smart home provider that is a registered NDIS provider, like Homeable!
